Inspiring Workplaces 
The Way Work Ought to Be!

An O.C. Tanner report on workplace culture trends highlighted a few findings that I think we should be aware of; thus I am making you aware. (And wow, do I cherish any opportunity to slip in a good 'thus'.) 

#1. Leaders can't create culture alone. Conversations with coworkers were the #1 source of inspiration for coworkers. As I pointed out in my Mastering Workplace Conversations presentation in November, this is another reminder why we need to be having more, and better-quality conversations at work. The research also pointed to the importance of creating strong teams: Strong, supportive teams create higher workplace satisfaction and mental health outcomes, greater engagement and retention, and a greater sense of belonging and inclusion.  

#2. Choose process over programs. The research strongly suggests staying away from culture-building initiatives that feel like band aid solutions. They found that 57% of employees felt worse after a workplace perk was introduced because the employees felt they were short term, window dressing gimmicks. Conversely, when leaders changed their behaviors trust rose by 26%. 

#3. The importance of recognition can't be overstated. The research found that teams are eleven times more inclusive when employees frequently share recognition moments.They are also twice as likely to try something new when they observe positive recognition, while employees who regularly hear positive customer feedback are twice as likely to say their work has purpose.
